Lately, when a friend gifted me a belated birthday treat of ice cream from my favorite store, I savored every bite. I had three decadent scoops of ice cream on a waffle and shared it with Cliff. The treat allowed for my kids to enjoy their own ice cream waffle treat too- complete with rainbow sparkles, even!
But that wasn’t my breakthrough — it was that I didn’t feel cloaked with shame afterwards.
You see, for years I’ve been struggling with shame and anxiety about my body.
But it was only after I spent intentional time with God re-ordering my soul and spirit about freedom from shame that I had a deeper breakthrough. In the busyness of life, I’d been striving to break free with no success.
But the quietness of time spent with God pierced the ceiling over me. Finally, I could breathe better- and enjoy other aspects of my life freely again- namely, eating and exercising without my usual hang ups. I no longer held myself to impossible moral standards tied to the food I ate.
In the same way, if there are areas of your life that you struggle with recurrently, I’m praying your time with God will help you. The retreat guide I created called “Unbound and Set Free” isn’t a magic pill- it’s simply a tool to help encourage you in the right direction.
While shame constantly comes back to haunt us, I hope we can all intentionally make time for Him to re-align our hearts to His. Breakthrough comes in waves and cycles- let’s be ready to embrace our next one.
