“Chinese New Year visiting is so tedious.”
“I meet with relatives but don’t know who they are.”
“I wish I could escape overseas every time it’s CNY.”
These are just but some of the genuine laments that many of us share about Chinese New year.
A British friend shared with me recently, “Nobody l know likes CNY. Why don’t you just do away with it?”
And I thought, “Instead of getting rid of it altogether, why not recreate culture & tradition?”
For the first time this year, we wrote personalized cards, gave out gifts, wrote heartfelt notes to older folks and and left IG handles for younger relatives on their angpaos (red packets). We decided to bring our kids along and give our red packets to cleaners, security guards and other staff who might be typically “unseen.”
This weekend, as your CNY visiting continues, what will you do differently?
