When I found out Cliff’s birthday would be sandwiched in between a busy ministry trip to the countryside, and a long drive to Rwanda for a week-long teaching trip at the Bible School, I wondered how we could possibly make Cliff’s 35th birthday special, amidst such a busy traveling schedule.
Ever faithful, God made this birthday extra memorable, with Cliff’s first one in the mission field being surrounded by close pastor friends all around the world- from Uganda, Tanzania and even Singapore, where our Missions Pastor happened to be present to join us!
How game they were to surprise Cliff the night before his birthday, with the cake and props I brought along!
While some might lament at having to serve on one’s birthday,
I could tell that it was pure joy and a privilege for Cliff
to minister to the kids at one of our community schools on the day of his birthday,
on the way back from the countryside!
On the night of Cliff’s birthday, however, a terrible bout of food poisoning hit him. Being on liver transplant medication makes him extra susceptible to tummy bugs whenever we are in the village. Up the whole night with a fever and terrible runs, we thought we might have to postpone our 2-day journey by car to Rwanda.
Nonetheless, God gave this Iron Man a heart and strength of steel to drive through 7 hours to the Uganda-Rwanda border, where we stayed over for a night at Lake Bunyonyi, before continuing the long road trip early the next day.

That night when we stayed over at the border, however, Cliff’s condition took a turn for the worse.
When I realized the medication I had given Cliff was not working, were we grateful to find a pharmacy nearby the next morning, where I could get him a once-only powerful antibiotic dose which nuked all the bacteria and parasites out of him. When we entered Rwanda, known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, Cliff managed to stomach his first meal, to enjoy the breathtaking views of lush, towering terraced hills, and the cool crisp air of the countryside.
When we reached our host’s home, how grateful were we to find a beautiful home atop a hill with a stunning view.
Serving God has ever been so surprising, rewarding and joyful.
How God’s infinite mercies continue to inspire us toward diligent, faithful and fervent service for Him.
Happy 35th Birthday, Cliff.
It’s not over, yet ; )
