How do you know when to push on and when to let God work on your behalf?
Before this book tour came to be, I wrestled with opposing advice—
One camp said, “Knock on every door, mass-write to big churches, and surely a door will open.”
Another camp said, “Don’t write to anyone, that’s cheapening yourself. Just trust God.”
“God,” I prayed, “help me stand in awe of YOU for every door opened. Let them be stories worth retelling.”
For months, a close friend promised to share a contact of a church in LA she’d attended but didn’t. Time passed. By the time she did, it felt too late. Yet, finally sensing God’s release to write in, I did. Even though I knew it was too late for me to be scheduled.
“Would you surrender to Me?” I felt God ask.
Only when I did, did God reveal His hand. The lead pastor reached out to me, sharing how his leadership team had already decided to adjust their pre-scheduled plans to accommodate me for that very weekend I was available; that a pastor I didn’t know from Australia had encouraged him to invite me to speak; that they almost never have guest speakers but decided to make an exception; that the sermon theme planned for that weekend was Jonah, a story that reflected all that my past season has been.😭
I’m learning- that while we can muscle our way through to push doors open for ourselves, or sit in total passivity, the best doors worth walking through are those which God requires us to wait for His invitation to walk into.
As I saw tears stream down the cheeks of others, hearing, “I’ve been so lost and dry with God that I told Him I’d give him one last chance to speak to me through the sermon today- and it’s the first time I’ve ever cried like this…” I knew it was Him.
Friend, if you’re struggling with feeling small, wanting to matter more, and hustling upwards, I feel you. But there is a better way- for us to surrender on our knees and know Whose we are.
Because when He opens those doors, it’ll be a story filled with child-like wonder of His goodness, a story worth re-telling, again and again.
