“Can we stop writing for a season?”
“Sure, but why?”
Twelve years ago, that was the best thing I asked for.
While Cliff and I wrote to each other as accidental strangers-turned-friends, it was a mentor who encouraged me to take a break from our accelerating and unusual friendship.
Cliff, being the true gentleman he was, agreed and honored that space.
We stopped writing to each other to pray and ask God if we should put an end to this “nonsense.”
Back then, there was no rule book to what had happened to us. Last night, as Cliff and I were invited to share the perks and pitfalls of online dating, even though we were on different continents, just as were twelve years ago, we both teared up watching that video of how we got together, made 10 years ago.
Truly, waiting and trusting in God is better than rushing headlong fast and furious into a relationship.
As we pondered over the principles and values to guard our hearts yet risk loving another, we distilled our thoughts into 6 questions, for those struggling to discern this space. I also wrote an article called Coffew Meets Bagel: Is it your cup of tea?
Cliff’s questions:
1. Are you happy single?
2. Are you in a healthy community?
3. Are you willing to cling loosely (to the relationship)?
My questions:
1. Are you willing to go slow?
2. Are you game to know the truth?
3. Are you willing to give yourselves up for a cause bigger than yourselves?
