Five years ago on this day, in my third trimester, Cliff and I packed up everything we had and moved 10’000 miles away because we knew it was part of God’s plan.
Against all odds, He opened up the way for my further studies at Johns Hopkins, but really, it all seemed like folly-
I was almost due to deliver.
We left for North America without knowing where we’d stay.
Midwives were in shortage and people said we’d have trouble finding healthcare coverage.
People warned us of the treacherous adjustment from a tropical climate straight into the thick of winter.
Risk exists because the future is unknown. Yet, the risks He presents to us are the ones worth taking because He knows tomorrow.
Who would have known a midwife who watched the video of our love story would commit to caring for us, free of charge? Who would have known the first rented apartment we visited was the right fit? Who would have expected that the first friend we visited gave me the only winter coat I had and needed, just in time for the season’s first snow which fell on me as I walked through her door?
I am reminded- that security doesn’t mean staying put- it means following God, even when it takes audacious faith; second-hand doesn’t mean second best- it means God’s provision through the thoughtful love of others; sacrifice doesn’t mean losing out, it means participating in the sufferings of Christ.
Five years ago, I penned this to my now four-year old:
“Joy comes from filling our hearts with who He is. Did you know, when you were made, your heart was the first thing the doctors looked for on the ultrasound, and the clearest way to see a well-formed heart is to locate the Cross in the centre? You see, what God really wants, is just to be at the center of our hearts.
We pray that you’ll grow up with an audacious faith, to trust God in impossible circumstances. Because even before you were born, He made a way when there was no way.”
This is your heritage, Sarah-Faith.
Will you write your heritage for your children today?
