Months ago, as missionaries-to-be to Africa, we were ridden with worries of an uncertain future: Where would we stay? How would we live? What would we do?
This morning, as we watched the African sunrise after a jog up and down the hill we now stay upon, filled with spying monkeys, shy squirrels and strange birds, I was reminded of a special prayer once prayed over us, that we would be a “light” and “a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden”.
It amazes me to even conceive of the miracle that we are now here, in the “Pearl of Africa”, with Cliff to teach in a bible school and myself in a public health institute, living in a home miraculously provided to us by an ever-caring God, that even geographically reflects that encouraging prayer of “being a light set on a hill”.
Where would we stay? How would we live? What would we do?
Yesterday, just sitting on the porch outside our simple home watching the sunset, I was moved to tears just recollecting how God has, in His own time and way, answered those questions one by one, with remarkable clarity and love.
The beautiful weather, gentle people, and the privilege of being able to make my husband a Saturday breakfast of simple “wholesome food from the earth” (think rugby-sized avocadoes for thirty cents) in a place we have only just learnt to call Home.
Praying our time here learning from, and I hope in due course, serving the people will be a fruitful one.
“You are the light of the world.
A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.
Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
In the same way, let your light shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
– Matthew 5: 14-16
And my God will meet all your needs
according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
