As our world gets smaller, I’ve gotten to know an increasing number of what we call “globally mobile” or cross cultural families following this space. 🌍Perhaps you understand— when you’re in a home away from home, festivities can feel bittersweet ❤️🩹
Quite a few people have asked us how we’re spending Chinese New Year and I’ll be honest- there isn’t a shred of festive atmosphere here that reminds us of home. 🫢
BUT, I’m reminded— that while we might not have pineapple tarts or bak kwa (traditional burnt pork jerky), I can make it special with the one packet of Hainanese Chicken Rice paste I brought from home. While we didn’t have the experience of a festive throng buying new clothes, I tailor made a new set using Kitenge (traditional Tanzanian fabric) to surprise our kids! 👗While we won’t receive red packets or “lohei” (my favorite tradition of tossing raw fish and shredded vegetables), I can make up our own tradition making dumplings from scratch. 🥟
I’m learning, that while the traditions of foods and smells and things we do help build the foundation of a home, there’s one thing that makes it most important, especially for those of you who are away from home, and that’s— knowing you’re dearly loved and deeply missed. 🍜
Happy CNY to all my Chinese friends— we miss and love you. 🍊🍊
*To my globally mobile friends and families who do not live in your passport countries, could you share with me your traditions and practices for important festivals that make yours special? 🌍 Love to hear from you 💛🧧🧧
