“Congrats!” I smiled, heart bursting with joy, sweat still pricking my face as the rain pattered down.
But only a straight face with a near-angry scowl stared back at me.
Re-entering triathlon again taught me countless lessons, some of which I’ve encapsulated here.
Most of all, I’ve learnt— that more important than winning races, is the values and principles we set as foundations in our lives in our “everyday training.”
After all, life’s big tests don’t make you a better person. They only reveal the person you already became through the countless days of preparation beforehand.
Cliff always reminds me- to remember to be the kind of person we can be proud to be on the day of testing- someone kind, gentle, willing to stop for someone weaker.
I’ll never forget how my heart swelled when others cheered me on, and when I clapped for others, even when i myself felt exhausted. I’ll also never forget the look of contempt a female competitor gave me when I offered her a fist bump of congratulations. (I found out later she came in top 3.) 🫣
Which kind of person do you want to be remembered for on your “race day” in life? 💛
I’ll always tell my girls – it’s better to be remembered as the one who fell by the wayside to help someone else, than the one who beat everyone else to be first.
Be the right kind of champion, sweethearts. 🏆
