“The doctors can’t figure out what’s causing the liver crisis. I wonder if I’m going to die.”
Prior to our engagement, these were not the words I longed to hear.
You had cancer when you were ten, underwent a liver transplant, and then miraculously completed an IronMan race- comprising a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride, and a full marathon. Your life was unreal.
When your health status dropped, everything changed. People told us to drop the engagement. Become “just friends.”
You lived in Canada; I, in Singapore. What were the chances that our paths crossed by accident from stumbling upon a triathlete’s blog? That the flight supposed to take you home broke down once, then kicked you out the 2nd time. That a missions organization with 65 offices around the world who had no idea about me deployed you to, of all places, Singapore.
With little faith, I bargained with God to extend your life for 3 years of marriage.
On our 7th year, struggling with the weight of children, missions, several cross-continental moves, toxic work environments and our own baggage, we nearly called it quits.
But we made it though.
Here we stand, with two littles… trying, failing, grating each other, shutting down and opening up again, hurting each other and forgiving, learning that…
Love hurts. Love is vulnerable. Love is hard.
But it is worth it. Here’s to another ten years with you, love 💛
