Few things bring me more joy than speaking to young people who are inquisitive, mature and passionate about making a difference to our world around us.
Two hours whizzed by at the University as we shared stories of joy, frustration, disappointment and hope about serving the poor.

Students from the University
One question which burned was,
“So if short-term trips cause so many problems, then why go anyway?”
My answer was,
“Serving is never a straightforward journey.
We make mistakes, we suffer pitfalls-
unfortunately, sometimes at the expense of others.
What matters at the end is
a heart of humility that is always open, always learning.
Only then, can we truly grow in understanding
of what it means to serve from our hearts.
Every time we choose to learn from others,
be it locally or abroad, we gain the opportunity to serve
more fruitfully, more intentionally next time.
It is a journey.
It’s not always easy, but it is always worth it.”

As I looked across the room,
I saw hearts burning for change, and minds eager to learn.
Another question in my heart was,
“How many of us will still be serving with as much
enthusiasm and passion 10 years from now?”
Serving is not a sprint.
It is a journey, a pilgrimage.
If we allow ourselves to become discouraged, disheartened and disillusioned,
then that is where our journey ends.
But if we choose to keep our eyes on God,
we will always have a reason to forgive, focus and fight
for what we know God has put into our hearts.
“”Only fear the LORD and serve Him in truth with all your heart;
for consider what great things He has done for you.”
